Janakpur, popular as Janakpurdham among the pious Hindus holds a significant place in the cultural geography of Nepal. The classic capital of Rajarshi (Sage King) Janak now enjoys the status of famous pilgrims. Located in mid-south on the border of India, this city is renowned for many reasons. First, there is a zone (administrative boundary) in the country named after it as Janakpur. And recently it has developed into a trade and industrial center. Moreover, it is the center of reverence of the entire Hindu world owing to its religious and historical importance for being the holy land where Goddess Sita or Janaki, Lord Ram’s consort was born.

 

Janakpur lies between 26041’47”N to 26045’9”N and 85054’9”E to 85057’22”E and situated at distance of 390km to the southeast of Kathmandu. The municipal extension of Janakpur covers on area of 260830 hectare with a population of 80734. According to record of the municipality it constituted in the 1967 AD, there has been an increase in the area and population of Janakpur during last decade increased due to rapid growth of Industry and commerce and administration.

 

Janakpur municipality, a town of medium size, is located within Dhanusha district, Janakpur zone of central development region of Nepal. It is the administrative headquarters of Dhanusha district. The municipality is well connected to the other parts of the country by Dhalkewar- Bhithamod Highway, which connects East-West Highway at! Dhalkewar to the North and India to the South. This town has very good all weather road connection to the Indian Border Town Madhubani via Jatahi which is 20 km. in south direction.

 

Janakpur is accessible by both land and air. It has an all weather airport. There are regular internal (domestic) flights from Kathmandu linking other domestic and international flights. Bus services are easier means to reach Janakpur from southern border of India. It is linked up to the bordering Bhithamod, Which is 19 km southwest from here encompassing Pipara and Jaleshwar (another famous pilgrimage known for water lord, the phallic image which is immersed in a stepped pond). There are regular bus service to Muzaffarpur and Patna via Sitamarhi. Janakpur has the only railway service in Nepal. It links Janakpur with the northeastern railway station of Bihar-Jaynagar.

Janakpur Information & Culture Center (JICC) is a SUPPORT Nepal initiative aimed at promoting youth role in contributing to the modern urban development of Janakpurdham with focus on raising awareness on the diversified cultural, historic, and traditional heritage of Janakpurdham; ancient kingdom of King Janak.

 

JICC offers various services to students, academia, researchers and development workers in Mithila art, culture, traditions and modern development of Janakpurdham.

þ  Library Services

 

JICC library has a collection of over 1200 books and periodicals range from medical science, economics, engineering, to literature. Besides, the readers have access of over dozens of local and national daily, weekly, fortnight and monthly newspapers and magazines.

 

þ  Resource Center

 

JICC also provides information and resources about Janakpurdham. Resources for development workers are also being offered at the center such as training manuals and various other publications on gender and social inclusion, health, environment, urban development, poverty, conflict management and peace building, youth, children among others.

 

þ  Reference Materials for Sale

 

JICC sells a variety of reference materials on Janakpurdham. CDs, DVDs and other audio visuals materials on different issues are available for sale.

 

þ  Training Hall

 

Well furnished and well-equipped training hall to provide comfortable and cosy environment for the purpose of training, interaction and workshop is also available at the center.
